Megalodon Tooth (VCU_3D_5216)
sketchfab
This massive megalodon (Carcharodon megalodon) once belonged to Thomas Jefferson. Dr. William Reid gifted it to him in 1806, and it originated from the Racehope Estate on Cooper River in South Carolina. The sediments it is found in are classified as coastal plain deposits dating back to the Miocene-Pliocene era. On March 11, 2020, a NextEngine Desktop 3-D scanner at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia captured a detailed 3-D scan of this megalodon tooth. Due to time constraints, however, the base of the tooth was not fully scanned. The specimen number is ANSP 959 and it is courtesy of the Academy of Natural Sciences.
