Ancient fortifications, such as the Bastion in polygonal work, showcase Roman Republican ingenuity with later angular reinforcement and elevated structures from late antiquity and modern times. In central Italy's vast region of ancient Latium Vetus, roughly spanning the coast and Apennines between Rome and Terracina, numerous examples of fortified walls and buildings demonstrate the impressive megalithic technique known as polygonal construction. This method involves cutting enormous blocks into irregular shapes that fit together seamlessly without mortar. Italy's polygonal walls are generally attributed to Roman craftsmanship, with dates ranging from the first centuries of the Roman Republic (fifth to third century BC). However, a reliable stratigraphy for most of these constructions remains elusive.
