Meerkats or suricates (Suricata suricatta) are small carnivores belonging to the mongoose family (Herpestidae). They live in various parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, much of the Namib Desert in Namibia and southwestern Angola, and South Africa. A group of meerkats is known as a "mob", "gang" or "clan". Typically, a clan consists of about 20 meerkats. Some super-families have up to 50 members. In captivity, their average life span is 12-14 years. In the wild, it's roughly half that amount.
