Medusa was a monster in Greek mythology, a Gorgon described as having a face that was hideous and human-like with living venomous snakes for hair. Anyone who gazed directly into her eyes would be turned to stone instantly. Most accounts portray her as the daughter of Phorcys and Ceto, although author Hyginus introduces an additional generation and gives Medusa different chthonic parents. Medusa was beheaded by Perseus, a hero who then used her head as a weapon because it still had the power to turn onlookers into stone. Eventually, he gave the head to Athena, who placed it on her shield. In classical antiquity, images of Medusa's head were used in evil-averting devices known as Gorgoneion.
