Medieval Art Definition A time of artwork that was marked by iconographic painting illustrations of Biblical scenes, driven by the early Christian church's influence as well as the Roman Empire's heritage. This blend created a "Barbarian" artistic culture in Northern Europe because it combined Christian and pagan art. The combination lent a distinctive cultural identity to medieval European art. Early Christian artists during this period drew ideas from Roman carvings, metalwork, mosaics, and paintings, leading to a rich output of artwork between 200-500 AD, at which time the Byzantine style began to take hold rapidly. Byzantine art is widely regarded as the finest artistic achievement in the Middle Ages due to its exceptional craftsmanship and high-quality materials used. Unfortunately, much of this exquisite artwork was destroyed, including many of the intricate mosaics and frescoes that adorned doomed churches during this time period. Celtic art in the Middle Ages flourished among the people of Britain and Ireland from around the 5th-12th centuries. The Hiberno-Saxon style emerged in the 7th and 8th centuries as a result of a blending of Anglo-Saxon and Germanic traditions, resulting in an Insular art style. From 300-900 AD, the Migration Period dominated the Middle Ages, characterized by artistic production from Eastern-European and Germanic peoples. Various styles of artwork became visible during this period, including Polychrome art, Animal-style, and Christian art. Pre-Romanesque art emerged from 800 to the 11th century, originating with Charlemagne's coronation as king. Classical influences from Roman art impacted the artists of this era, giving rise to Carolingian art – which in turn led to the development of Gothic and Romanesque art. Romanesque art is distinguished by sturdy buildings featuring thick walls and rounded arches and windows. The structural characteristics of these edifices were borrowed from ancient Rome, earning the art period its "Romanesque" name today. Gothic art originated with the advent of Gothic architecture in 1140 – a departure from Romanesque architecture. During the renovation of the Abbey Church of S. Denis in 1144, Gothic sculpture emerged, gradually gaining traction throughout Europe as it replaced the Romanesque style. Eventually, Gothic art blended seamlessly into Renaissance art, marking a significant era for panel painting and fresco works. Meanwhile, Islamic art continued to flourish during the Middle Ages, witnessing notable developments in illustrated manuscripts, textiles, ceramics, metalwork, and glass. Artists in the Near East, Islamic Spain, and Northern Africa produced works from 600-900 AD before branching out into distinct regional styles starting around 900.
