The nasal helmet, a Western European invention, offered facial protection by featuring a nose-guard or 'nasal' - a single metal strip extending from the skull or browband over the nose. Used during the Early Middle Ages to High Middle Ages, this helmet type replaced prior designs based on Late Roman helmets such as the ridge and spangenhelm constructions. Initially, nasal helmets were conical in shape with either single iron sheet or composite segmented skulls, the latter being earlier methods that gave way to more complex single-piece constructions as metallurgical skills improved over time.
