An axe, or ax, serves multiple purposes such as shaping and cutting wood, harvesting timber, acting as a weapon, and symbol in ceremonial and heraldic contexts. It comes in various forms, but typically consists of an axe head and a handle, known as a helve. Precursors to today's axes include the stone-age hand axe, used from 1.5 million years ago without a handle. These were later fastened to wooden handles. As technology progressed, axes were made of materials like copper, bronze, iron, and steel. The axe is a simple machine, functioning as a wedge or dual inclined plane that reduces the effort needed to chop wood by splitting it into two parts under pressure at the blade. The handle acts as a lever, allowing users to increase force at the cutting edge without using the full length of the handle, though overuse may reduce efficiency in certain circumstances.
