Andrea Pisano (1290 Pontedera – 1348 Orvieto), commonly referred to as Andrea da Pontedera, was a renowned Italian sculptor and architect who left an indelible mark on the world of art. While residing in Florence, Pisano created numerous significant works of marble sculpture that unmistakably showcased Giotto's profound influence. In 1340, he succeeded Giotto as Master of the Works at Florence Cathedral, where he produced a series of reliefs that may have been designed by his former mentor. These masterpieces adorned the great campanile and featured the Four Great Prophets, the Seven Virtues, the Seven Sacraments, the Seven Works of Mercy, and the Seven Planets. The duomo proudly displays Pisano's other notable works in marble. In 1347, he took on the role of Master of the Works at Orvieto Cathedral, which had already been designed and commenced by Lorenzo Maitani. These and the aforementioned doors represent Pisano's sole known creations. By breaking free from Byzantine influence, Pisano made a groundbreaking contribution to modern art.
