I uploaded revised versions of each piece with minor adjustments on April 5, 2020. Low-cost, rapid (80-90 minutes) printed parts for a lightweight medical face shield are now available. This shield fits comfortably over glasses. A photo shows an MD wearing the shield, goggles, and mask. Over 100 MDs have already picked up these shields to fight COVID-19. Only two additional components are needed: overhead transparency film (8.5x11 inches) and hair elastic. Standard hole punching is recommended for the transparency film. Printing skinny parts can be tricky due to plate adhesion issues, so filament adjustments may be necessary. A single unit of this design fits on a MK3S printer, while two units fit on a Mini. It's essential to make extra washers since they're fiddly and easy to lose. When it comes to using these shields, prioritize: dispose after single use, replace the film, don't use for four days, wipe down with alcohol, or reuse immediately if absolutely necessary. PLA and PETG materials melt in an autoclave. I've already produced 100 of these shields for Canadian MDs, who appreciate them and are distributing them instead of disposing. If you're interested in offering similar shields to your local clinic, doctor's office, hospital, grocery store, or pharmacy, now is the time! You can purchase transparency film from Staples or a similar retailer. Unfortunately, Amazon won't deliver film or elastics at this time. Design improvements are encouraged, particularly for adapting the shield to fit A4 European film sheets and standard holes.
