In ancient Greek mythology, Medea is revealed as the offspring of King Aeëtes of Colchis, a niece of Circe and the granddaughter of the radiant sun god Helios. This legendary sorceress plays a pivotal role in the myth of Jason and the Argonauts, first appearing in Hesiod's Theogony circa 700 BC but most famously known from Euripides' tragic masterpiece Medea and Apollonius of Rhodes' epic poem Argonautica. In nearly every account, Medea is portrayed as a powerful sorceress and often depicted as a devoted priestess of the mystical goddess Hecate. This stunning sculpture by French artist Jean-Jacques Pradier vividly captures the pivotal moment in Jason and the Argonauts where Medea, compelled to fall deeply in love with Jason by Aphrodite and Eros, ingeniously escapes with him after cleverly distracting her father by brutally killing her brother Absytus. In some versions of the myth, Medea is said to have savagely dismembered her brother's body and scattered his remains on a distant island, knowing that her father would halt in his pursuit to retrieve them for a proper burial.
