Commissioned posthumously at the death of this renowned scientist in 1836, the monument underwent a plethora of preparatory studies. By 1846, the cenotaph remained unfinished, but it wasn't until 1877 that it was finally erected, albeit with some modifications to the original plan and the addition of a medallion featuring Segato's portrait on the sarcophagus. The serpents that appear to emerge from behind the scientist's head serve as a poignant reminder of his groundbreaking experiments aimed at petrifying organic tissues.
