Medusa's gaze shifts slightly to her left, her eyes locked in the same direction as her turned head. Her plump cheeks and innocent face fail to convey menace, instead exuding a sense of surprised delight. The ferocity of her character lies hidden beneath thick eyebrows and a wild mane of hair that surrounds her features. Delicate curls are rendered in perfect symmetry, with a single lock rising high between two winglets. Replacing snakes that typically form her locks, Medusa's tresses are depicted with tails knotted beneath her chin and heads raised above her brow. The deeply etched carving on the white marble is characteristic of an object designed to be admired from afar in open air. This 102-cm medallion still retains reddish hues in its hair and black pigment in its eyes, despite the passage of time.
