Small Improvements Add Up: A Revamped Project Unveiled I've finally had time to complete this project and I'm impressed with how much it's improved. Sorry to say, but if you've already printed the incomplete version, I feel for you - it was a lot of work. To make up for it, I updated three parts and added a new one that brings the iris to life, so you can reuse your existing leafs with the new components. Hopefully, this will give you a more impressive 3D-printed tabletop piece to show off. ORIGINAL POST REVISITED I stumbled upon an intriguing DIY paper mechanical iris online and thought it was pretty cool. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any similar irises on Thingiverse, so I dug deeper and found a design on Instructables that might be printable. The biggest challenge was printing the leafs thin enough and getting them to snap into place with pins on both sides. After several attempts, I managed to get it working decently well, although it still can't close completely. It seems like it's stuck at 0.6mm thickness - maybe a different leaf design will allow for a tighter closure and fewer leaves. This project was primarily meant as a 3D Printing proof of concept. In the future, I might refine it by creating steam punk goggles or even a camera lens cap that slides open and closed without removing the cap.
