I came across an intriguing steampunk wooden mechanical iris once, but faced an issue with its design. Typically, mechanical irises employ a hinging mechanism for the petals, which causes gaps between them as they open. I sketched a concept where the petals remain connected, mimicking a camera iris throughout its motion range. Note that this is a single model from a patterned concept piece, lacking some pins and details.
