Mechanical Counter

Mechanical Counter

I'd always been curious about how mechanical counters worked, and as it turned out, they were much simpler and more elegant than I ever imagined. After discovering this fact, I created a design that could be easily 3D printed. Through research on the internet, I found several designs that kept all the gearing internal to the number reels, but one particular model stood out for its ability to help understand the inner workings of mechanical counters. This design features three number reels that allow counting up to 999 and utilizes a lost motion gear pair between each reel, which transfers motion to the next reel after one complete revolution of the lower digit reel. This design is based on Matthias Wandel's model, available online at http://woodgears.ca/counter/index.html. I've modified some features to make it suitable for 3D printing and simplified the actuator, making it a straightforward push operation. For full instructions, visit http://www.3dprinterclocks.com/.
