Christopher Polhem forged the mechanical alphabet around 1700. Wooden prototypes laid out the principles of physics and mechanics, aiming to educate students at Laboratorium mechanicum founded in 1697. Following his passing, the collection persisted as a teaching aid, becoming part of the Swedish Royal Model Chamber. In 1925, the collection of thirty-one models was transferred to the newly established National Museum of Science and Technology.
