Christopher Polhem forged a mechanical alphabet around 1700, shaping wooden models that demonstrated fundamental physics and mechanics concepts. These models were designed to educate students at the Laboratorium mechanicum, founded in 1697. After his passing, the collection remained an educational tool, eventually becoming part of the Swedish Royal Model Chamber. In 1925, the collection's 31 models were donated to the newly established National Museum of Science and Technology.
