Christopher Polhem crafted the mechanical alphabet around 1700, showcasing wooden models that embodied fundamental physics and mechanics concepts. He designed these models to serve as a teaching tool for students at Laboratorium mechanicum, founded in 1697. After his passing, the collection continued to educate generations, eventually becoming part of the esteemed Swedish Royal Model Chamber. In 1925, 31 meticulously crafted models were carefully transferred to the newly established National Museum of Science and Technology for safekeeping and preservation.
