Measure the speed of a motor

Measure the speed of a motor

To get started on designing the propeller for my 3D printed RC boat, I had to learn about the performance specs of some Johnson motors that I picked up on Ebay, so I came up with a simple device. The first 3D printed piece is where you place either a Johnson or a 540 type electric motor and photodetector - its design was really straightforward. The second 3D printed part is the rotor for the motor which will break the light beam twice per revolution; connecting this setup to an Arduino lets me easily monitor relationships between speed (RPM), current, and acceleration.
