The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series consists of twin-engine, short- to medium-range commercial jet airliners with a single aisle configuration. Built upon the DC-9 platform, this series can accommodate up to 172 passengers depending on variant and seating arrangement. The MD-80 series made its commercial debut on October 10, 1980 with Swissair. The family includes the MD-81, MD-82, MD-83, MD-87, and MD-88 models, all boasting identical fuselage lengths except for the shorter MD-87. Later variants like the MD-90 (1995) and Boeing 717 (originally MD-95, launched in 1999) followed suit with modified designs.
