The MCL 80 (for Metro Crémaillère Lyon year 1980) is a model of metro at crémaillère, built by Alsthom and the SLM Winterthur company. The MCL 80s are put into service in 1984 on line C of the metro of Lyon, a line that comes from the old funicular of Croix-Paquet. The MCL 80 cars are ordered at the occasion of the extension of line C on December 8, 1984 towards Hénon and Cuire. They come to replace the 3 old MC cars (numbered MC1, MC2, and MC3) that were only 10 years old. The extension requiring additional cars and the homogeneity of the fleet being decided, the MCL 80s replace the MC1, 2, and 3. In total, five examples are delivered. The design of the MCL 80 is chosen very close to the MPL 75 in order to facilitate the maintenance of the rolling stock of Lyon. The MCL 80s are built within a collaboration between Alsthom and the Swiss company SLM Winterthur, the latter bringing its expertise for the construction of the crémaillère bogies. The crémaillère is of type Strub.
