Compared to the anime Shin Mazinger Shogeki! Z Hen , ZERO is much darker and tells a separate story considering what could happen if Mazinger Z goes crazy. The story begins in a ruined world where humanity. has been annihilated by Mazinger Z turned evil and Koji is the only human left. An android approaches him and offers Koji a chance to stop the carnage, he accepts and the android uses Rust Hurricane to destroy his body. The android Minerva X does this to send his soul back in time.
