Maxar Technologies' winning proposal for the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) of NASA's cislunar Gateway outpost was chosen from a pool of competitors. The design is based on Maxar/Space Systems Loral's proven SSL-1300 GEO comsat bus, but with significant upgrades to meet the demands of the Gateway mission. These enhancements include high-thrust electric propulsion systems, larger roll-out solar arrays that generate more power, and specialized docking and EVA interfaces to facilitate seamless integration with other modules. NASA selected Maxar as the preferred vendor for this critical component in 2019, and the company has since proposed its PPE design for use in various commercial space station applications.
