Quick Facts Construction began in 1926 and was completed in 1928. Herbert Hugh Riddle designed this iconic structure. The total cost of the construction project was $2,617,040.00. Renovations took place from 1982 to 1983 under the guidance of Harry Weese and Associates. This skyscraper stands at an impressive 42 stories tall. The maximum height reaches 521 feet / 159 meters above ground level. Timeline In 1998, small sections of the terra cotta facade began to fall off, prompting a precautionary mesh wrap around the tower. By 2000, engineers declared the cupola at the top of the building structurally unsound and removed it for safety reasons. A new cupola was installed in November 2001. On November 22, 2003, tiles from the Mather Tower fell onto two pedestrians below, causing concern among local authorities. In May 2009, a hotel called River Hotel opened its doors inside this historic building. Did You Know? The original design for this structure included a second identical building and a radio tower as part of the initial concept. Tenants occupying the top floor enjoy an unobstructed view but are limited to 280 square feet of living space. This iconic skyscraper was originally named after Alonzo Mather, who revolutionized cattle transportation on rail cars with his humane invention.
