This is a unique dice with various mathematical operations displayed on each side, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, exponents, and modulo. It can be used to decide who goes first in a game or as a tool for math practice. Designed using Fusion 360, the picture was rendered with Blender. Also shown: Dice V1 Standards CCSS Overview and Background Introduction I originally created this dice for a project to determine who goes first. This can be useful for that purpose. You can use it for activities or as practice. Not every side may be suitable for every grade level, so you may need to explain what each side means (exponents = repeated multiplication, Modulo = remainder). Lesson Plan and Activity Activity A 1) Write 2 numbers on the board or a place where students can see them. These numbers can be generated randomly, determined by dice throws, or drawn from cards/sticks. For older groups, you can choose to use negative numbers. 2) Have students roll the Operations Dice to find out which operation they will be performing. Some operations may require explanation. 3) Have students calculate the answer. Choose a method to manage the numbers if the number has more than a manageable number of decimal places (e.g., truncation, rounding, bar notation, keep as is, fractions...). Activity B 1) Get a game that can be played in under 10 minutes (e.g., tic-tac-toe). 2) Have students roll 2 regular, 6-sided dice and the Operations Dice. 3) Have students calculate based on the instructions for Activity A. 4) The person with the larger number goes first.
