This lesson provides an excellent opportunity for students to become enthusiastic about creating a scale model and utilizing rulers to take precise measurements. As I teach my STEM elective, I continually seek out ways to support the core classes and reinforce the foundational skills necessary within those classes. Standards: Construct, draw, and describe geometrical figures while explaining their relationships. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.G.A.1 Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric shapes by calculating actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale. CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.G.A.2 Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes under given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noting when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle at all. NGSS: A practice common to both science and engineering is using and constructing models as valuable tools for representing ideas and explanations. These tools include diagrams, drawings, physical replicas, mathematical representations, analogies, and computer simulations.
