Maternal affection

Inscribed at back right: ‘E.H. BAILY, R.A./sculp. London/1841’ Baily unveiled a plaster group of a mother and child called 'Affection etc.' at the Royal Academy in 1823. He later carved several variants in marble, one being dated 1837 and now housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum. This piece is believed to be the work known as Group, Maternal Affection that he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1837. The Fitzwilliam's marble was crafted four years after this, replicating Baily's original composition. Maternal Affection proved extremely popular, prompting its reproduction on a smaller scale in Parian ware, a newly developed type of porcelain. This allowed aspiring middle-class collectors to acquire the composition.
