MassPortal XD30 / ED30 calibration tool

MassPortal XD30 / ED30 Calibration tool MassPortal XD30 is a delta 3D printer capable of producing high-resolution, high-precision prints. Ideal for industrial use, it features automatic bed leveling through an inductive sensor installed near the print head. For XD20, three round metal pieces are installed on the heat bed to enable the inductive sensor to detect its height. In contrast, XD30 does not have these metal pieces inside the heat bed; instead, a separate tool is required for manual adjustment during automatic bed leveling. This tool consists of a plastic stick with a round metal attachment. One customer unfortunately lost their calibration tool and sought our assistance. After contacting the manufacturer, we discovered that they had altered their design for newer printers, leaving no backup tools available. We were unable to retrieve any documentation on the original tool, prompting us to conduct reverse engineering to create a replacement. We began by examining a piece of round metal produced by MassPortal, made from "iron" with a diameter of 24mm and thickness of 2.8mm. Please refer to the attached CAD file (MassPortalCalibrateMetalCircle.dxf) for details. Using these parameters, we manufactured several steel components with the same dimensions. However, our initial attempts were unsuccessful due to differences in material induction between the metal and the inductive sensor. Even when the size of the metal matched, the sensor failed to detect its correct location. To resolve this issue, we purchased an inductive sensor and performed precise measurements, discovering that our "Type 201 stainless steel" required a thickness of 5.7mm (2.8mm metal + 2.9mm plastic) to achieve identical results with MassPortal's auto bed leveling. To accommodate various material differences, we designed a customizable stick that allows users to adjust the desired height padding for their metal components. This should enable everyone who attempts to produce the metal themselves to achieve successful auto bed leveling on MassPortal XD30 and ED30. Since we have already created compatible tools with precise measurements and thorough testing on real machines, if you are experiencing issues with lost calibration tools, please contact us at uCRobotics Taiwan for assistance.
