Massospondylus, a sauropodomorph dinosaur, boasts a rich taxonomic history dating back to the mid-nineteenth century when Richard Owen first described its fossils. Despite initial misconceptions of it being an ancestor to modern lizards, Massospondylus is now recognized as a link between sauropods and their bipedal saurischian ancestors. The type species is M. carinatus, with M. kaalae also considered valid. Its fossils have been found in locations such as Lesotho, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, dating from the Hettangian to Pliensbachian periods of the Jurassic.
