Mason Jar Mousetrap

Mason Jar Mousetrap

This is an improved version of my earlier Multi-Mouse Trap. It has an internal latch that holds the flapper door open, making it a little more inviting. Just smear a little peanut butter or other lure on the vertical part of the latch mechanism and assemble the lid. About 5g of weight (about 1/3 of a mouse-weight) on the latch will release the lid. In theory, you can catch multiple mice at a time, but the late-comers will have to be bold enough to push the door open themselves. Perhaps the convivial presence of one of their brethren already in the trap will help to embolden them. It uses a 3 1/2" dia. opening Mason jar. No extra supports are needed for printing. The JarTrap part has a couple of tiny built-in supports at the hinge that need removing. After printing the parts, use a needle file or sandpaper to remove any nits or lumps. The flapper door should fall easily when released from the latch. After you've baited the trap, place the jar in nestled in the dirt or a wadded up rag to prevent it from rolling. Just poke the flapper door up with your finger and it will catch on the edge of the latch -- ready to catch mice!
