Mask Valve (Tesla type)
thingiverse
The project outlines the creation of a Tesla-type valve that can be integrated into do-it-yourself masks or valveless masks. Using valve-equipped masks offers several practical benefits. The valve facilitates breathing and prevents moisture from forming inside the screen without compromising clinical requirements. The primary advantage of a Tesla valve over traditional valves lies in the absence of moving parts. This has two key benefits: it allows the entire valve to be printed in one piece, and it increases its lifespan by reducing wear. The valve is reusable after washing with a disinfectant solution (ethyl alcohol, diluted sodium hypochlorite, or a commercial disinfectant). Operationally, the valve can be applied by making a cross-cut in the mask's fabric and securing everything with the supplied bolt. The valve is designed to promote airflow while slowing down incoming flow. Additionally, the design prevents powders and micro-droplets from entering. The decision not to design an entire mask is deliberate. Using masks made entirely of rigid plastic does not allow for facial adaptation, which is possible with a sheet of waxed cloth. Moreover, using a plastic mask will inevitably result in skin marks, limiting prolonged use. The current project is in the alpha phase due to limited time and resources during quarantine in Italy. There are no special material limitations; PLA is the preferred choice (PETG with low stringing is also a viable alternative). The entire valve weighs less than 15 grams; future versions aim to contain everything within 10 grams. The attached G-code is for an MK3 Prusa printer with a 0.4mm extruder. Supports are not necessary, except for the upper base's bridges, as all angles exceed 45 degrees (even internally). The lack of masks currently limits the use of professional equipment to healthcare staff. This project aims to be useful in two ways: constructing DIY masks and inspiring larger impact projects during this challenging period.
