Mask of a Merchant God at The British Museum, London
myminifactory
This mask was likely crafted in the Maya lowlands from extremely pure imported copper since no local sources have been discovered. The distinctive nose and tongue are characteristics of the Maya merchant gods. The piece may have originated from the Postclassic Chontal Maya of the Yucatan peninsula, who traded as sea-going merchants, exchanging copper, textiles, cacao, salt, and obsidian.
