Among the Kalabari Ijo people living in Nigeria's Niger River delta area, sacred rituals are performed to honor water spirits, believed to control food supplies and fertility. A wooden mask depicting otobo (hippopotamus), a water spirit, is worn on top of the head, adorned with feathers and cloth. The masks, used for entertainment and ceremonies, also bring wild bush powers into town and village areas, allowing humans to interact with them and harness their strength and social benefits. Common characters in these powerful masquerades include beasts, spirits, strangers, witches, or the deceased.
