The mashrabiya is an iconic architectural feature found predominantly in Arabic homes. Known also by other names, such as shanshūl and rūshān, this distinctive projecting oriel window typically adorns buildings two stories high and above. A marvel of carved wood latticework encases it, while the inside glitters with vibrant stained glass colors. With its long-standing history spanning across centuries, mashrabiya remains an integral element in traditional Arabic architecture up to mid-20th century era. Commonly situated on street-facing sides of buildings, its interior application can be spotted in the internal courtyard spaces. Informally called 'harem windows' by English speakers.
