Marzocco

The Marzocco stands as a proud emblem of Florentine power and magnanimity. This fearsome lion, holding high a shield emblazoned with Florence's noble lily coat of arms, was brought to life by skilled artisans for Pope Martin V's private quarters within the revered Santa Maria Novella between 1419 and 1420. In 1812, it took its rightful place in front of Palazzo della Signoria, replacing a decaying fourteenth-century Marzocco that had long since fallen into disrepair. But alas, by 1847, Donatello's masterpiece was forced to retreat indoors due to the ravages of time on its ancient stone.
