When Mary Harris Thompson arrived in Chicago in 1863 to practice medicine, she found a city desperately crying out for medical care specifically for women. The two hospitals already existing in the city were clearly woefully inadequate; one of them flatly refused female patients. Prompted by this dire situation, Thompson launched the Women and Children's Hospital in 1865, and then in 1870 established the Women's Hospital Medical College, marking a groundbreaking moment as the first medical college for women anywhere in the Midwest. At the time of her passing, Thompson had earned international acclaim for being the first female surgeon licensed to practice in Illinois and for paving the way for women to pursue careers in healthcare.
