This sculpture depicts Mary, Jesus' mother, mourning from San Canziano's church. Mary was a Galilean Jewish woman of Nazareth in 1st-century BC, and the mother of Jesus as per New Testament and Quran scriptures. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke describe her as a virgin; according to Christian theology she conceived Jesus through Holy Spirit while still a maiden. The miraculous conception took place when she was already engaged to Joseph. She accompanied Joseph to Bethlehem where Jesus was born. The Gospel of Luke begins its account of Mary's life with the Annunciation, when angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced her divine selection as the mother of Jesus. According to canonical gospel accounts, Mary was present at Jesus' crucifixion and is depicted as a member of early Christian community in Jerusalem.
