The Martini, situated on the Grand Place, is both renowned and towering over Groningen's skyline. The Martini Church owns this imposing structure. In commemoration of completing 500 years since construction started in 1482, the city of Groningen honored the event. This specifically relates to the stone foundation, comprised of two squares and an eight-sided shape, each featuring intricate Gothic trusses or walkways. It is built from rich sandstone Bentheinier. The tower's front façade above the entrance proudly displays three engraved images from left to right: Bemlef, St.Martinus, and Rudolf Agricola - renowned figures deeply intertwined with Groningen's history. This structure has come to be known as 'd'Olle Grieze,' named after its distinctive gray hue that it sports today. In conjunction with a partially wooden spire, the tower reaches an impressive height of 97 meters, standing atop a shallow foundation only three meters deep. Interestingly, the foundation was originally comprised solely of cowhide leather.
