H.G. Wells' timeless classic novel comes alive in the movie as Martians invade Earth, bringing destruction and chaos to the planet. To learn more about the making of this iconic film, check out the following link: http://www.roger-russell.com/war/war.htm The original models used in the movie were crafted from copper metal and green glass by renowned art director Al Nozaki. The design was inspired by the majestic shape of a manta ray, providing an eerie yet fascinating appearance. Although it's challenging to discern the copper material on screen, silver would be a suitable alternative. This 3D printed model is brought to life using StrongHero Silk Copper PLA and ESun Green Transparent PETG filaments. The lens of the heat ray is expertly crafted from Taulman Clear PETG, adding an air of authenticity to the design. To illuminate the transparent green components, white LEDs are used, while a white LED with a red plastic filter creates a captivating effect for the heat ray. By incorporating diffuse LEDs and additional diffuser inserts printed in thin-wall white PLA, the model's lighted areas emit a soft, ethereal glow reminiscent of the original movie models. Experimenting with UV-reactive filaments paired with UV LEDs could yield even more striking results. The base and pylon are designed from white Hatchbox PLA and then spray-painted flat black to achieve a sleek appearance. The base features a rectangular hole in front of the pylon, which accommodates a micro-slide switch, while another hole nearby is perfect for mounting a through-hole power jack. Important note: This model requires significant post-processing to remove integral supports and ensure proper fitment. Please consult the Printer Settings section below and review the instructional drawings provided. Update 10/31/2018: Additional files have been uploaded for the nose, body, and wingtips without supports, allowing users to add their own supports using a slicer. Update 11/29/2018: A new copper filament option has become available, offering an even more striking appearance.
