The Valles Marineris system, named after the Latin word for "Mariner Valleys," is a breathtaking network of canyons carved into the Martian surface east of the Tharsis region. Spanning an impressive 4,000 km (2,500 mi) in length, 200 km (120 mi) in width, and reaching depths of up to 7 km (23,000 ft), Valles Marineris is one of the most extensive canyon systems in our Solar System, rivalled only by Earth's rift valleys and Baltis Vallis on Venus in sheer length.
