Mars Station
thingiverse
In this Mars Station project, students with knowledge and understanding of Planet Earth and Mars will design a versatile base to support astronauts on Mars in various ways. The first hexagon model is a bedroom with two bunk beds, one sink, a dressing table, and a closet area, making the most of space while providing a relaxing environment and comfort. The second model is a bathroom with essential elements for human survival, including water recycling and waste disposal systems. The students will use CAD software to design and create their models, considering factors such as space optimization, usability, and contamination prevention. They will also research and apply knowledge about Earth and Mars, the Solar System, and recycling/waste disposal systems. Throughout the 6-class period lesson, students will work in groups to design and present their models, applying problem-solving skills and critical thinking. The guiding questions for design will be used to facilitate discussions and debates among students. The extension activities include designing a ship for astronauts to travel to Mars, designing a ship to carry materials to Mars, applying for the Mars One trip, and creating a government system for a new civilization on Mars. Assessment will be based on student participation, model design, and presentation. The rubric will evaluate the following criteria: * Design concept (30%) * CAD software skills (20%) * Research and application of knowledge (20%) * Presentation and communication (30%) References: * NASA's Journey to Mars: http://mars.nasa.gov/ * National Geographic's Solar System: http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/space/solar-system/mars-article/ * Scholastic's article on Mars: http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/article/mars * Time Magazine's article on The Martian: http://time.com/4050371/the-martian-true-history/ Note: This revised lesson plan maintains the core requirements and activities while condensing the content into a more manageable format.
