Mars rover wheel with motor and planetary gearbox
thingiverse
I'm drafting a wheel design for my friend's Mars rover model, utilizing spare motors from CD/DVD mechanisms. The size of some components isn't ideal, so I've made adjustments in S3D after the initial test print - specifically for the front motor frame and planet gear holder, which need to be sized together. A critical oversight is the lack of cooling holes in the motor frame, while the top motor intended for rotation is merely decorative, requiring a stepper or servo motor instead. The corresponding frame hasn't been printed yet. The grey disc at the front wasn't fully modeled in 3D software but was combined from two parts in the slicer. This version has been tested with a 5V supply and operates acceptably, albeit somewhat noisily due to excessive gear tolerance and a large wheel made of hard PLA.
