Mars rovers are autonomous vehicles that navigate across Mars' surface upon arrival. Compared to stationary landers, these roving robots can explore larger areas, be directed to specific points of interest, position themselves for optimal sunlight exposure during winter months, and contribute to the development of remote robotic vehicle control techniques. Notably, there have been four successful Mars rover missions: the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mars Pathfinder with its inactive Sojourner rover; and their active Opportunity rover and inactive Spirit, both part of the Mars Exploration Rover mission, as well as the Curiosity rover under the Mars Science Laboratory mission.
