The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured this breathtaking view. Built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., this 65 kg instrument cost $40 million and was directed by the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. HiRISE boasts a massive 0.5 m aperture reflecting telescope, making it the largest in deep space history, with resolutions of 0.3 m/pixel (about 1 foot).
