High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) is the camera aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter that made this breathtaking model possible. Built under the direction of the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., HiRISE weighs 65 kg (143 lb) and cost $40 million USD to develop. This marvel of technology consists of a 0.5 m (19.7 in) aperture reflecting telescope, the largest ever built for a deep space mission, allowing it to capture pictures of Mars with resolutions of 0.3 m/pixel (about 1 foot), revealing objects as small as those below a meter across.
