Mars and Venus
myminifactory
Sergel was inspired by Homer's The Iliad in several works. He depicts the story of Venus' rescue by Mars, showing the war god as a powerful defender of the helpless love goddess, who cries out in pain. Sergel started the group in 1775 in Rome and finished it in Stockholm in 1804. The sculpture is meant to be viewed from all angles; each perspective brings out a unique character in the composition. A plaster model (NMSk 453) of the work can be downloaded online. Three-dimensional scans were produced using an Artec Eva, aiming for a digital representation as close to the original as possible. However, these scans should not be considered exact duplicates due to limitations and inaccessible areas that may cause deviations from the original.
