The Marlay was constructed in 1890 by Workman Clarke & Co., a prominent shipbuilding firm based in Belfast, with the vessel measuring a respectable 61 meters in length. A steam collier owned and operated by Tedcastle, McCormick & Co., a Dublin-based shipping company, she carried her cargo with pride until December 15th, 1902. On that fateful day, the Marlay encountered severe weather conditions and rough seas while approaching the Irish capital. As one of her crew members was preparing to lower a starboard lifeboat, a massive wave crashed into the port side of the vessel, ultimately leading to its tragic demise. Today, the Marlay rests 4 kilometers east of Howth Head, at a depth of 54.5 meters beneath the surface. This information was gathered by INFOMAR, and further details can be found on their website, specifically in the wreck sheet available at http://www.infomar.ie/data/Shipwrecks/Box50/pdfs/Marlay_Final.pdf.
