The Mark V tank was initially planned as an innovative model with a wooden prototype completed; however, when the new engine and transmission originally intended for the Mark IV became available in December 1917, the advanced Mark V design was abandoned to prevent production disruption. Instead, the Mark V designation was given to an upgraded version of the Mark IV that incorporated the latest technology. The initial Mark IV design aimed to be a significant improvement on the Mark III but faced technical delays, resulting in the Mark V being nearly identical to the original Mark IV concept - essentially a highly modified Mark III.
