The Mark V Tank was initially planned as an innovative new design; however, when the advanced engine and transmission originally meant for the Mark IV became available in December 1917, the first Mark V concept was abandoned to prevent production disruption. The Mark V designation was then switched to an enhanced version of the Mark IV, incorporating these new components. Originally, the Mark IV was intended as a significant advancement over the Mark III but faced technical delays, resulting in the Mark V being essentially an upgraded Mark III with modifications.
