Service to the Fatherland and for Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR come with Two Orders. The orders reward citizens who have provided particularly outstanding services to the strengthening of Russia's statehood, socio-economic development of the country, research activities, development of culture and art, and sporting achievements that have made a significant impact. The Order "For Merits Before Fatherland" is meant for outstanding service in many areas such as: cultural enrichment through artistic contributions, peace efforts among peoples, or a crucial contribution to enhancing Russia's defense capabilities. It has four different ranks and is awarded with stars, symbols, or boxes that come along with certificates for those being honored. The order is divided into 4 levels with degrees 1 & 2 including signs with star attached while degrees 3& 4 have only the sign. Soldiers in the Soviet Army are also recipients of another award - For Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR. These honors acknowledge exceptional duty performance and distinguish members of various branches within Russia's military force who show bravery, integrity and perseverance.
